A pre-college drawing class at the San Francisco Art Institute: summer of 2005

A note on attendance: 3 unexcused absences will earn you a failing grade in the class. Make sure to call if you will be absent. Also, we will not be giving any incomplete grades in this class, no exceptions.

   

Week 1.        Materials and Techniques

 

Monday       

9.30-11.00     Welcome and Introduction of instructors and students, survey.

11.15-11.50   Introduction of Thematic Project and Exhibition Proposal, Further introduction and orientation.

 

Tuesday      

9.30-11.00     Drawing media: students introduced to various media useful to drawing, graphite, charcoal, ink, colored pencils, papers, alternative media. Mark making demos and exercises.

11.00-11.15   Break

Wednesday 

9.30-11.00     Gesture: students introduced to various techniques of mark making, free hand drawing from life, drawing from flat sources like photographs, abstracts or improvisational work, stencils and other special techniques.

9.30-11.00     Composition: students introduced to various elements of composition and scale.

9.30-11.00     Perspective and point-of-view: students introduced to perspective and point-of-view concerns. perspective demos, building a perspective window camera.

Week 2.        Language of form

 

Monday       

9.30-11.00     Drawing from life: students will be encouraged to observe, but exaggerate what they see. What is important about the image: -can obvious elements be left out, imaginary elements included?

11.25-12.30   Independent work

 

Tuesday       Improvisational drawing: using formal elements as a visual language.

9.30-11.00     Students will use sound and atmospheric elements as inspiration for formal choices.

11.00-11.15   Break

11.15-11.25   Some examples of artists’ work: Francis Bacon, Anselm Kiefer, Julie Meheretu.

11.25-12.30   Independent work

9.30-11.00     Found elements: investigation of thee effects of found elements usage. The difference between drawing and collage.

9.30-11.00     3-D drawing: students will be introduced to the drawing aspects of sculpture and the sculptural possibilities in drawing

Week 3.        Scale and space

 

Monday       

9.30-11.00     Scale and space: Students will experiment with scale relationships using clusters of drawing elements.

9.30-11.00     Cluster and dialogue: students will make series of images with a single theme in mind, using drawings, found objects, text.

9.30-11.00     Alternative Surfaces: Class will focus on drawing and transferring images onto alternative surfaces.

9.30-11.00     3D drawing II: Class will revisit the sculptural drawing techniques discussed earlier in the class and tie them in with the dialogue elements introduced in Cluster and dialogue.

9.30-11.00     Object Oriented drawing: Students will focus on the variety of possibilities in making an image of an object or an idea.

9.30-11.00     Collection: class will focus on approaches of presenting an idea: use of drawing, collected items and text.
