Playlab is the toddler space at the Exploratorium, located adjacent to the skylight area. The area, which had fallen into disrepair, was redesigned in 2004 by myself and Denise King. This was a small project with a budget of just over $3000, so the work focused mainly on creating a space for parents and small children to relax, read and take shelter from the bustle of the rest of the museum. The challenge here was to create a cozy space without comprimising the no-nosense aesthetic of the museum as a whole. This was achieved by a limited palette, custom artwork and interesting, boldly striped wall paper. |
